IonophoresIonophores are chemical active compounds able of increasing the permeability of biological or artificial lipid membranes to specific ions. The Ionophores are normally small hydrophobic molecules. often with cyclic structure, which act as mobile carriers across the membranes. Others are able to create ion permeable channels across membranes. Many Ionophores act as antibiotics, and many act as uncoupling agents by short-circuiting the proton gradient across mitochondrial membranes. The inner part of ionophores has usually polar groups forming a ring geometry that may fit and envelop a specific ion. Ionophores quench the electric charge of the ion Ionophores by Fermentek : |
